Cyclone “Remal” inundated hundreds of villages in Bangladesh with storm surges and destructive winds of up to 120 kph, killing at least seven people and leaving millions without electricity. According to the Met Department, “Remal” was downgraded into a cyclonic storm on May 27 morning after making landfall around midnight on Sunday, with wind speeds ranging from 80 to 90 km per hour.
“According to a post on X by IMD, the system is expected to continue moving northward for a while, then turn northeast, gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 27, 2024.” The storm was centered over coastal Bangladesh and adjoining coastal West Bengal at 01:30 hrs IST today, May 27, 2024. It was about 115 km east of Sagar Islands, 105 km west-southwest of Khepupara, 70 km southeast of Canning, and SO km south-southwest of Mongla in West Bengal.

May 27th, in the morning, flights will restart at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport in Kolkata. Services at the airport have been down for nearly twenty hours, beginning yesterday. The South part of the Sealdah Division saw the return of train services around 9 a.m.
A path of devastation was left behind by Remal. Disruption was caused in different parts of the state, including Kolkata, as trees were uprooted, electric lines were knocked down, and thatched hut roofs were blown away.
Kolkata Municipal Corporal Mayor Firhad Hakim reported that 56 trees were uprooted and that efforts were ongoing to remove the remaining trees.

Nearly 15,000 homes in West Bengal were damaged, affecting twenty-four blocks.
A top official of the State government stated that Cyclone Remal affected about 15,000 dwellings in 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards, primarily in the southern coastal areas of West Bengal. “In addition to 337 electric poles falling, at least 2,140 trees were uprooted in different parts of the state,” he added.
“Based on the preliminary assessment, a minimum of 14,941 residences sustained damage, with 13,938 being partially affected and 1,003 completely destroyed,” he stated. After another round of evaluation, the figures will likely go up. The evaluation process is ongoing, and our district officials are hard at work. The official stated that they are still calculating the damage estimate.
Currently, there are 77,288 persons in the 1,438 safe shelters, he added, adding that 2,07,060 had been relocated there by the administration. The number of gruel kitchens that are currently operational is 341. He announced that 17,738 tarps had been handed to those in low-lying and coastal areas who had been impacted. Diamond Harbour, Kakdwip, Namkhana, Sagard Island, Fraserganj, Bakkhali, and Mandarmani were among the places hit hard. | PTI

Approximately 30,000 homes wiped out in Bangladesh cyclone as death toll climbs to 10
According to high-ranking local authorities, “the death toll from a cyclone that smashed into low-lying areas of Bangladesh has risen to at least 10 people,” adding an additional 30,000 dwellings destroyed and tens of thousands more damaged.
Showkat Ali, the government administrator of the Barisal district, revealed that seven individuals perished after being crushed beneath crumbling buildings or walls. In nearby districts, three more people perished, some of them by drowning.
While Cyclone Remal was making landfall on May 26, the coast was pummeled by fierce gales and breaking surf. Although it had transformed into a storm by Monday afternoon, the shore was being battered by winds and rain. The cyclone is releasing heavy rainfall, and Mr. Ali stated that the wind speed is high as well.
Two persons lost their lives in the Khulan district, according to Helal Mahmud, the government administrator. More than 1,23,000 homes in the division were damaged by the cyclone, with 31,000 homes being entirely destroyed, he said.
“More than 40,000 people are still in cyclone shelters due to heavy rains and strong wind,” administrator Tofael Islam said of Chittagong, adding that another life had been lost while there. According to Biswanath Sikder, head engineer of the country’s largest state-run power distribution business, the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, about 12.5 million people lost electricity. reports the AFP
