At the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, the Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets to win the IPL trophy for the third time in ten years. Players, owners, management, and supporters of KKR were ecstatic at the team’s triumph in the major event. However, one feature of the celebrations that attracted everyone’s attention was captain Shreyas Iyer’s imitation of Argentina captain Lionel Messi’s victory celebrations following the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Notably, Iyer imitated Messi’s enchanted celebration following the FIFA final before ultimately presenting the trophy to Rinku Singh, having been given it by BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Jay Shah.
Shreyas Iyer says KKR have been ‘flawless’:
“It is pleasing and the performance has been flawless throughout,” Iyer told broadcasters following the game. I am at a loss for words at the moment. We have been outstanding from the beginning, and when we first came out, all we asked of ourselves was support one another in any circumstance. Either way the game may have gone. SRH has been playing outstanding cricket the entire season.”
“We were fortunate enough to bowl first today, and everything worked out well for us as well. We are grateful for SRH’s performance this season. They have been outstanding,” the KKR captain continued.
KKR register 8-wicket victory:
On Sunday, the KKR bowlers had an outstanding run, dismissing the Sunrisers’ batting lineup for 113 runs. With three wickets to his credit, Andre Russell was the best bowler for the Kolkata Knight Riders, taking two wickets apiece from Mitchell Starc and Harshit Rana.
In response, KKR lost Sunil Narine early in the innings, but Venkatesh Iyer and Rahman Ullah Gur Baz went on to form an important partnership. Even though they lost Gurbaz towards the end of the innings, KKR won the IPL 2024 trophy handily thanks to a Venkatesh Iyer single in the match’s eleventh over.
