On June 1, voters will cast their ballots from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is running for office. He faces opposition from Congressman Ajay Rai and Bahujan Samaj Party member Athar Jamal Lari. In both the 2014 and 2019 general elections, Prime Minister Modi was victorious from the parliamentary constituency in Varanasi, which is a BJP stronghold.
In the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress fielded Rai, the head of the UP Congress, against the prime minister in Varanasi, but he came in third place both times. Ajay Rai will be challenging Modi in a Lok Sabha election for the third time.
After the sixth round of voting, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) voiced their confidence that they are within striking distance of 400 seats and will surpass that threshold after the seventh round of voting.
