Amar Kaushik Discusses Shraddha Kapoor’s Limited Role in Stree 2

Stree 2 will star Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, with a sequel to the 2018 film Stree. It is fast approaching the ₹300 crore-mark worldwide in box office collections.

Amar Kaushik’s Stree 2 is making a killing at the box office; it opened on August 15. However, a few people have a problem with Shraddha Kapoor’s female lead character getting less screen time in the film.

The director defended the creative call by arguing that keeping Shraddha’s scenes limited contributed to amplifying her character‘s impact, thus increasing her presence in importance and making her character more memorable.

In an interview to Bollywood Hungama, the director opened up about the less screen time.

Amar raises his voice

He was asked during the interview about some viewers complaining that Aparshakti Khurana has less screen time in the second half.

To which, Amar explained, “Yes, a lot of people told me but that’s how the character was. If you see, even Abhishek Banerjee comes 40 minutes into the film. With Aparshakti, it was vice versa. Until he got hypnotized or possessed by Sarkata, he was fully there in the madness. After that, he became someone else. It was the demand of the script”.

“We write what is required. We don’t think, ‘Yeh actor bura maan jaayega, yeh role bada hai, yeh role chota hai’ (That this actor would feel bad, this role is short or long).

For us, the script is the Bible and things have to be organic. My producer also gave me the freedom in this respect. Some people even complained that Shraddha Kapoor’s screen time is less.

“Lekin agar Shraddha zyada dikhti, toh jis tarah ki entry ki usne, uska impact nahin hota, If we added more scenes featuring Shraddha then her entry would not have had the impact that it had now”.

            Regarding the movie in brief

Stree 2 centers on a group of friends led by Rajkummar Rao as the tailor Vicky, alongside an unnamed mysterious woman who comes to town and starts killing men at night, played by Shraddha Kapoor.

Their town of Chanderi is haunted by this villain named Sarkata. In leading roles, the film features Abhishek Banerjee, Pankaj Tripathi, and Aparshakti Khurana. It is produced by Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan.

It’s been six years since the sleepy little Chanderi was carried away with the doings of a mysterious woman who ensured Rajkummar Rao’s local ‘ladies tailor’ Vicky, still firmly pronounced as Bicky. Another entity invades that and starts targeting independent young women.

This monster is far more male version than that chudail who used its severed head as a weapon and towered over terrorised townspeople, especially azaad khayalon waali auratein.

The film, scripted by Niren Bhatt ( the original creators were Raj and DK) consists of a -rushing-about gang, throwing out one-liners  their earlier film, as well as sending up Bollywood celebrates  ‘disha batani’, and Disha Patani, haha, and generally act like feckless dolts, who somewhow manage to do the right thing, despite themselves.

Which seems to be the perfect sweet spot that Maddock Films has cracked: the adolescent horror comic that primes its audience to laugh out loud even as the not-very-scary scares are piling up.

The memo seems to be not to go deep at any point: keep it silly, stupid.
