They say that the ballot is more powerful than the bullet, and they are absolutely right to say that. This is due to the fact that the future of a republic is in the hands of the voters, and the Constitution of India enshrines the fundamental rights of the Indian voters. Additionally, the Constitution enumerates the responsibilities that voters need to take into consideration both before and after casting their votes. It is our civic responsibility to exercise our right to vote, which is also one of the key tools that our nation has utilized throughout our history to ensure that our inalienable rights are protected.

Date:

The 25th of January is designated as National Voters’ Day in India, which is observed annually with the purpose of encouraging the citizens of the country to take part in the electoral process. In this year, the celebration is being held for the fourteenth edition of the event.

History and significance:

On January 25, 2011, the very first National Voters’ Day was observed. The purpose of this day was to encourage a greater number of young voters to participate in the election process. At the time, the Union government, which was led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had approved a proposal from the law ministry to this effect. During that time period, the former minister of information and broadcasting, Ambika Soni, had made the observation that new voters who had reached the age of 18 were displaying a lower level of interest in enrolling themselves in the electoral rolls.

In order to address this matter, the Election Commission of India made the decision to initiate a state-wide initiative to identify all eligible voters who attain the age of 18 on January 1 of each year, and this initiative will be carried out in all polling locations across the country. The Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) would be issued to these voters on January 25 of each year, and they would be enrolled before the election.

Theme:

As a continuation of the topic from the previous year, the National Voting Day 2024 theme is “Nothing Like Voting, I Vote For sure.” This theme is dedicated to the voters. In this year’s edition of the national function that is being organized in New Delhi by the Election Commission of India, the Chief Guest will be none other than Droupadi Murmu, the President of India. Additionally, Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge), will be present at the event as the Guest of Honor.
